June 30 - Trip from Pendleton, OR, to Lynden, WA

What a beautiful drive! We started out in the desert mountains, like we had in Pendleton. Then this snow-capped mountain started popping up. We looked at the atlas and found out it was Mt. Rainier. Then as we traveled, we started seeing lots and lots of vineyards. Then the apple orchards mixed with the vineyards. It was quite a contrast from the desert mountains above and the lush green below. We left Pendleton at 7:00 a.m. and got to Lynden around 2:15 p.m. We will try to go to bed early and get up early again to cross the border. I knew potatoes were not allowed, but the lady here at the desk said no fresh fruit, vegetables, nor beef! I had all beef hot dogs, frozen ground beef, three onions, and a bag of garlic bulbs. I donated them to the office. I had to waste! We gassed up the truck and got some Canadian money for things we will not charge. It looks like funny money. Phil and I are still smiling about the Gamecocks winning the national championship in baseball. I hope that ends the chicken curse!

Phil saw Terry Chick was an evening news anchor for a Washington tv station. I e-mailed him and he e-mailed me back. Phil and I both taught his two children. He caught me up on them. The son is recently married and his wife starts on her Ph.D. at UT this August in herpetology. His daughter works in L.A. He loves the weather and said he could hardly write his 11:00 p.m. broadcast for listening and pulling for the Gamecocks. I wish I could have stayed awake to listen to his newscast to see if he said anything about the Gamecocks' win.

I hope all goes well, smoothly, and fast at the border tomorrow. I sure do not want to be pulled aside and have to open the camper for an inspection! We think we are OK. I sure hope so! I'll be praying! Once we get to the border, I will take the battery out of the cell phone. It cost about $5.00 to call and get a reservation at the campground (would not do it online). The wifi is spotty, so we will try to get online somewhere in the campground to check e-mail. It just depends on how irritating it is as to whether I will blog while there. If it is a pain, I'll catch up when we leave July 8.

Monday, June 28 - to Pendleton, Oregon

We got up pretty leisurely this morning since we only had a four hour drive to Pendleton, OR. We are camping at the Wildhorse Casino and RV Park, run by the Umatilla Native Americans. We are here because it is pretty cheap for full hookups. I doubt we even go into the casino except to eat their buffet at lunch tomorrow. Then Wednesday, we have a long drive to Lynden, Washington for one night. The landscape in Oregon looked like a moonscape for a good ways because we did not see any trees and no houses. Then we started seeing some trees and snow-capped mountains. The casino is actually at the bottom of a six mile, six percent grade from a mountain. That is it for now!

Sunday, June 27, Meridian, ID

Phil shopped yesterday, and I caught up on the computer. Today we did laundry, went to Walmart and Lowe's. I got a drawer and container to put on top of that to better organize my main food cabinet. It works great! We rode over to Boise and Phil and I took photos of Boise State's stadium. Phil has thought that stadium was neat (the only one with blue turf which he thinks they are changing to green). Then we went to eat some seafood at McGrath's Fish House. We got a seafood combination platter. It had fried cod, fried prawns (shrimp), fried clams, and fried scallops and two sides. I got their famous New England Clam Chowder and a salad. Phil got fries and salad. The breading was way too greasy, and I pulled all I could get off of my fish and shrimp and gave Phil my clam strips. The scallops were really good, very sweet. That was the highlight of my meal. Now we are back and relaxing. Tomorrow we travel to Pendleton, Oregon, for two nights. Then we go to Lynden, WA, for one night, and then head across the border to Vancouver for a week. After Vancouver, we will spend three nights in Bellingham, WA. Phil will get the oil changed in the truck. We have traveled about 5,000 miles now. We also think we might do our whale watching trip there in Bellingham, rather than Vancouver. It seems less expensive from Bellingham. Good day. I always miss my church family on Sundays. I love that I can keep up with my children through e-mail, calls, and FaceBook. We miss them and have to look at photos often (like we do in Townsend!).

The Past Week - June 19 - June 26

What a glorious week! Last Saturday, we were still in the awesome Tetons. I still miss them! Sunday - We moved to Yellowstone and the Madison Campground. It was 14 miles from West Yellowstone, MT. The campground was right on the convergence of three rivers, the Gibbon, the Firehole, and the Madison. I cannot tell you how that delighted the flyfisher husband.

Monday - We went to West Yellowstone and visited a few flyshops. Phil bought some flies, chatted about the fishing, and bought his three day fishing permit for Yellowstone N.P. We went back and surveyed the rivers.

Tuesday - We went to Mammoth Hot Springs and Tower Falls in Y.N.P. On the way, we saw a momma grizzly with FOUR cubs!!!!! I got a photo of the mom, but she was moving too fast to get a second shot of the cubs. I took a lot of photos. We also went to the Artists' Paint Pots. I remember the mud pots vividly from our visit 26 years ago. This year, they were not bubbling like in the past. The larger amount of rain has an effect on them. I was a little disappointed, but we still enjoyed seeing them.

Wednesday - It was a gorgeous day! Phil flyfished all day long, with a short lunch break. He only almost caught one. It got close enough to see it was a brown trout. That kind of thing would discourage me from fishing because I like to catch them if I am going to invest my time fishing. Phil, on the other hand, is just as happy being in the water, making the effort, and enjoying the scenery. He had a wonderful day. I had a great day reading a book, watching him, and taking photos. You will see he got very, very close to some buffaloes who crossed the river near him. He did not see them until they were just right there at him, so he continued doing what he was doing and they peacefully crossed.

Thursday - We went to Old Faithful Inn for lunch. The lunch buffet was $13.50 and included the beverage. I had panfried rainbow trout, salad (nice salad bar), macaroni salad (because the rice pilaf was not good), apple crisp, and lemonade. Phil had the above, plus baked beans and bbq chicken. We had cell covereage there, and I had a message to call Barbara, a friend from Townsend. While I was talking to her, one of the unpredictable geysers erupted. I was talking to Barbara and taking photos at the same time. We stopped at some of the thermal features on the way back to the campground and pretty much ate up the day sightseeing.

Friday - We sadly packed up and traveled to Boise, ID. It was over 400 miles and took us about eight hours. Phil does not go over 60 mph, even though the speed limit is 75. We are in Meridian, ID, actually. We have full hookups for a change. It is much warmer here! It was in the low 80's yesterday, and today will be mid-80's. Until we get to Lynden, WA, four nights from now, we will be in the mid-80's.

Saturday - Phil will go to Cabela's, Sierra Traders, and Camping World. We went to Sierra Traders last night after we ate at Cracker Barrel (the one and only in Idaho). That was enough for me, but Phil will go back and leisurely look over everything! At some point here, we will go to the grocery store and/or Walmart. I will post a few photos on here and more on FaceBook. This is the first day I have worn shorts in three weeks. It has been too cold! I even had to shave my legs!

Observations: We are still enjoying our devotion time and prayer time together. I also am in awe of how God tells us He loves us. We hear, see, and feel His love for us each day in His beautiful creation and in the many ways He blesses us - health, protection, patience, etc...... Thank you, Father! How awesome is your love!

Day 27 - Sat., June 19

Last full day at the Grand Teton National Park. It is sad to leave such a place of beauty, but I have hope we will be back. We spent the day getting ready to leave tomorrow for Yellowstone. We sat outside and enjoyed the 70 degree weather. We actually put on short-sleeved t-shirts today! I haven't gotten out my shorts yet, though.
We got the solar panel down. That little old thing has been wonderful! I do not think we would have come anywhere near lasting two weeks without it. Now it will help us last another five nights in Yellowstone at Madison Campground.
Tomorrow is Father's Day, so I hope we can get to West Yellowstone for a meal. We will call the children since we will not have cell service tomorrow. I called my dad today, but he is at the beach playing golf. I will have to call him when we get to Boise. To all fathers out there, have a wonderful day! It is a tough job being a good dad!

Day 26, Friday, June 18

Oh, it was chilly this morning! When Phil got up to turn on the propane heater, it was 30 outside and 36 in the camper. It has warmed up fast, and we are sitting in Jackson Hole with about 62 degrees. It is the most gorgeous day we have had here. The blue, blue sky is incredible. I have already posted photos on Facebook. We saw a huge grizzly as we were leaving the Colter Bay area, and I got a backside photo of it. We got gas ($2.88 a gal. - cheapest so far while here), ate again at Bubbas, and will hit the grocery store next. Then we will sadly leave Jackson Hole. I probably will not post tomorrow unless something exciting happens. We will be doing laundry and getting organized for the trip Sunday. We will head to Yellowstone for five nights at Madison Campground. Phil is hoping to do some flyfishing while we are there. Then we move to Boise for three nights, and then Pendleton, OR, for two nights. Then we move to Lynden, WA, for one night and go to Vancouver, BC, for a week. We will then have a week before we have reservations in Kalispell, MT, for a week. Then we will have about two-and-a-half weeks before our reservations in Banf National Park for a week. Well, we are sitting in the parking lot of Sears using their wifi. Phil is ready to move, so have a great day. We sure are!

Day 25 - Thurs.

Just a short note to say we woke up to it snowing. It is about 2:00, and the snow has ended. The sun is out! It snowed all morning and I still see a flake or two. Tomorrow morning we are going to get up a little earlier to go to Jackson Hole to eat breakfast at The Bunnery. Helen and Mike recommended we do that. The high today is supposed to reach 50, but tomorrow 64. Tonight is supposed to be 29 degrees. Brrrrr! I still prefer it to the heat and humidity back home. We will stock up on groceries for our five days in Yellowstone and get gas. It is a lot more expensive in West Yellowstone. I doubt I will be able to post much when we are camping in Yellowstone because there will not be a handy cabin rental office with wifi close by! I'm ready to bundle up and head back to the camper. Have a great day! We are!

Day 23 and 24 - Tues. and Wed.

Day 23 - Tuesday We decided over our coffee that today might be the better day to go back to Yellowstone. Yesterday was the first day we have had no rain at all. We had a sunny day last week, but it rained that evening and night. Today was a mix of sun and clouds and rain/storms. We still had a great time. We saw Old Faithful erupt and took some photos inside the Old Faithful Inn. We’d have stayed for lunch but the hundreds of people who watched Old Faithful decided to eat there, too. We headed back to West Yellowstone to get a couple of things from the Yellowstone Outlet that are much cheaper there than in the park. We ate lunch there and continued the loop by the falls, the canyon area, along the Yellowstone River, Madison, etc. There are a lot of rivers in Yellowstone. It is a good thing Phil decided not to fish there because he would have a difficult time deciding on the one to fish! It looked pretty much like the only ones being fished were the ones warmed by the geyser basin. It amazes me how much variety one can see in one day of the landscapes. Also, we had barely gotten in Yellowstone when a moose and her very young baby walked across the road right in front of the car in front of us! I got a photo. It is not as good as one without the car in front of us, but it certainly is better than nothing. We felt so blessed! I also got a good photo of a trumpeter swan and a few lovely wildflowers. It was another great day.

Wed., Day 24 - We have decided to stay at the Madison Campground in Yellowstone for five nights and then stay three days at the Boise-Meridian KOA for three nights. We have 11 nights to get to Vancouver. It rained hard all night last night, but the sun is out and in today. We are expecting more rain this afternoon and night. Temps will be dropping with a low tomorrow night around 31. Brrrrrrrrrrrrrr!

Day 21 and 22 - Sun., Mon. June 13 and 14

Sunday we did not do much, just rested. It rained in afternoon and evening. Monday (today) we rode the Teton Park Rd., a very scenic drive. We saw a bear that onlookers thought might be a black bear (although it was brown). Then we stopped at several overlooks and the Jenny Lake Visitors' Center. Jenny Lake is gorgeous! It is crystal clear. We then went to Jackson Hole to eat lunch at the Snake River Brewery Restaurant. I had a great turkey reuben, and Phil got a hamburger. The fries were some of the best I have ever had. Then we went grocery shopping and headed back. We went back the Teton Park Rd., too. We saw a moose and a grizzley!!!! The grizzly had a huge bear jam, and rangers were there to manage the crowds. I hope you have Facebook because I posted the photos on there. It was a thrilling day! The animals waited for the sun to come out! We were so happy to have a sunny day and temps approaching 70 degrees in Jackson! I also enjoyed seeing some wildflowers because they have been few and far between. I love wildflowers! A Mountain Bluebird flew right in front of the truck, but I had no time to get a photo. They are beautiful birds! Lovely, lovely day! The mosquitos are out, though. Huh-oh! I am truly delicious to them.

Day 20 - Sat., June 12

It was a chilly, dreary day, so we did laundry and read a lot. We cheered ourselves by going just a bit up the road to Leek Marina for pizza for supper. It was really good and reminded us of our favorite pizza at Anthony's in Bryson City, NC. We have now paid for another week, so we will leave here and start for Vancouver, BC, next Sunday. You cannot beat $10 a night camping in one of the most beautiful places on earth. We are so blessed!

Saturday, June 12, 2010

Day 19 - Friday, June 11 - Yellowstone, West Yellowstone

We woke up shivering. The outside temp was 35 degrees, and it was 40 in the camper. We thought it was going to be a bad weather day, but the sun came out. We decided to make a day trip to Yellowstone and West Yellowstone. We had a good day, and I took lots of photos. We will go back to Yellowstone for at least one more day. We finally saw some fly fishermen on the Fire Hole River and the Madison River. Also, when we passed through a couple of snow flurries and some sleet, but the temp was 43. It was still cool to see it snowing. We have seen lots of snow on the ground, but this was the first we have seen falling. It is supposed to get as cold again tonight. I am so glad I have two quilts! We stay cuddly. For supper we had chicken and dumplings, a good cold weather comfort food! We have been very pleased with our solar panel. Even when it is cloudy, it still charges (though, I am sure, not as much).

Days 15 and 16 - June 7 and 8 - Tetons

Day 15 - June 7 - Jackson Hole, WY
OK, let’s see, where did I leave off? We were at Moose Visitor’s Center on our way to Jackson Hole. In Jackson Hole, we ate lunch at Bubba’s and had delicious BBQ. While there, I heard a lady telling how she had seen a wolf this morning. Add that one to my list of want-to-see animals. We also went to some stores and bought t-shirts. We visited Dollar Tree and K-Mart. We will go to the grocery store the next trip. I did remember the arches made of elk antlers in the center of town from the last trip. I got some photos. It is a neat town and has added a lot of stores since we last visited 26 years ago. So far, we have seen buffalo and elk and pronghorn antelope here at the Grand Teton National Park. On the way back to the campsite, there were some cars parked on the side of the road and people walking back to them. I asked what they had seen, and they had seen a moose and baby. They were out of sight when we came. Maybe next time!

The rain stopped!!!! The sun came out late afternoon. Phil got to play with two of our new toys for the trip. We got out his telescoping ladder and put our solar panel on the roof. The solar panel was very easy to hook up to the battery. I hope we keep getting some sun to keep our batteries charged. During the night, rain returned, the hardest we have had. The solar panel weathered the rain quite well.
Day 16 June 8 - morning - We awoke to 39 degrees in the camper. We could see our breaths! We got the little propane heater going, and I put the coffee pot on the stove. Before long we were a toasty 56 degrees. Helen had suggested we go to the General Store here at Colter Bay to get their cinnamon buns. Phil went to get them, and we really enjoyed them! Then we went back to the General Store and marina area and got some great photos of the Tetons poking out of the clouds.

They are rebuilding the road between the Tetons and Yellowstone. There are miles of absolutely no pavement between here and there. We are not looking forward to that! We know we will be here for at least a week, and will soon decide where we will go from here. We may catch Yellowstone later in our trip, after we have gone to Canada, or we may make some day trips from here. We are still talking about heading to Vancouver and do some whale watching. Who knows? Phil spent the day on top of the camper taking out old caulk and putting in new because we had a leak. When he got up there, he found some cracks in the caulking. The guy who fixed our air conditioner said he worked two hours removing the seal. We think that tugging and such must have compromised the caulk in places. Anyway, he got that done. We spent our one sunny day of the week’s forecast here at the camper, not scouting for wildlife and great photos as we had hoped. I still got some nice photos. The Tetons are breath-takingly beautiful. I had truly forgotten how majestic they are. I still love my Smokies, but I love these in a different way. We got up to 64 degrees this afternoon! It was very pleasant, but as soon as the sun starting going down, it got very chilly. We had a nice campfire, and now we are relaxing and will go to bed soon. It gets light here around 5:30 a.m. We don’t let that bother us because we usually sleep until about 8:00.

Monday, June 7, 2010

Day 14 and 15 - Dubois to The Grand Teton National Park

We barely got out of Dubois before the rain started, and it has not stopped yet (Monday morning 11:22). Also, it is very cold. Yesterday we had on long-sleeve shirts, sweatshirts, and a jacket. My ears are cold! I am going to look for ear warmers or something when we are in Jackson. The forecast is for rain/snow mix in Jackson starting Thurs. night (I think) and go through Sat. One of the nights is supposed to be 35. We have a propane heater, so that should help us stay warm. We are supposed to leave Sunday. I am hoping we get a few days of sun to try out our solar panel and actually see the Tetons! We can see parts through the rain and fog. We saw a couple of herds of elk this morning. I am wanting to see a moose and grizzly bear! I am keeping my eagle eyes open for them. Well, I did not bring my camera in (Moose Visitor's Center), so I will not post photos. They are very few because of the rain. Have a great day and stay turned!

Day 13 - Greybull to Dubois, WY (Thermopolis)

The scenery is so beautiful. Around every corner and over every hill, it changes. I took about 100 photos today, most as we were driving. We did stop at Thermopolis to see the Hot Springs State Park. We walked their boardwalk, and I took some photos. They have a nice park with picnic areas, water slides, and three pools. Two are olympic size. People can bathe in the mineral springs pools free. There is a smell of sulfur, but it is not as strong as some of the places in Yellowstone. We also stopped in Riverton and did a little Walmarting. When we got to Dubois, it was 59 degrees. The wind was blowing. I looked at NOAA and we were gusting up to 41 mph. That was the strongest wind we have had on the trip so far. We are glad it has settled down. It is a nice campground. Phil said the toilets would flush a moose. LOL! He really did! We did laundry and now we are just chilling a little before bed. We will get up as early as we can make ourselves and head to Colter Bay in the Grand Tetons. We can't get reservations there, so it is first come, first served. It will take us about two hours to get there, so we hope to get off early. I'll blog as often as I can. My friend Helen has told me where to go to get online. God continues to bless us on this trip!

Day 11 and 12 - more Crazy Horse and trip through Bighorn Mts. to Greybull, WY

Day 11 - We went back to Crazy Horse to spend more time in the Native American Museum, watch Lakota dancers, and see the amazing laser show that night. The museum is huge and is really worth seeing. The dancers were amazing, too. The second set we saw compete and obviously do very well! The laser show started at 9:30 p.m. It is set to music and narrative. Large photos are projected, along with laser images, and the mountain is lit in various colored lights. We really enjoyed our time at this exhibit and encourage all to see it.
Day 12 - We hit the road again, traveling to Greybull, WY, for the night. We went through many different types of terrain. The biggie was climbing and descending the Bighorn Mountains. We got up to about 10,000 ft. above sea level. I was amazed to see the snow and even a lake that was still partially frozen. It was 64 degrees on top of the Bighorns, and the snow melt had the rivers rushing and gushing! It was a lovely day with many stops for roadwork (We are seeing Obamaroadcare everywhere!!!!). We ended up traveling about seven and a half hours. We will hit the road again tomorrow and go to Dubois, WY, and get up early Sunday morning to try to get a spot at Colter Bay in the Tetons National Park. They have a chance of a rain/snow mix tonight! We will have no Internet, but Helen has told me where the hotspots are. I’ll try them out once a day or once every two days.

Day 10 - Custer State Park Wildlife

We spent the day here in Custer State Park. When we went to the Game Lodge to put yesterday’s blog on the Internet, we saw a buffalo scratching his head on a small fire hydrant. We pulled over and I started taking photos. He rotated around, and I thought he was scratching his belly. Phil corrected me, and told me the buffalo was scratching his privates. Photos are posted. You be the judge. Is that a smile on his face?
We went to the Grace Coolidge Store where we heard from fellow campers that the Western Tanager could be seen. We walked on a trail, but we did not see any. We went back to the picnic area there and sat at a picnic table for about ten minutes. Then we saw one, and then another. I got some pretty good photos. They are beautiful birds.
We sat outside the camper by the little stream and did some more bird watching. Our two campground buffaloes showed up this morning, and they have stayed around all day. When we came back from the Wildlife Loop Rd. tour this evening, they were lying down. I guess they will spend the night here, too.
Before we got to the Wildlife Loop Rd., we saw two female bighorn sheep in front of the Park Office. On the Wildlife Loop, we saw hundreds, maybe a thousand, buffaloes and lots of calves. We also saw mule deer, white-tail deer, turkeys, and burros. I have a photo of a Mountain Bluebird. We also saw an oriole, but it flew off before we could get a photo. I need to look that one up, but I think it looked like an Orchard Oriole. All in all, it was a very good day! We hope to go back to Crazy Horse tomorrow. Now Phil has decided that perhaps we will go see the laser show. Then we will come back and start organizing to leave early Friday morning.

Day 9 - Mt. Rushmore, Deadwood, Chief Crazy Horse

What a day! It was a chilly day, 54 degrees in Deadwood today, and 48 when we got back to the camper this evening. We left our around 8:30 this morning and got back to the camper close to 8:00 this evening.
First we rode the equivalent of The Dragon to Mt. Rushmore, curve after curve after curve! It was good to see Mt. Rushmore again. It is an awesome work of art and a wonderful tribute to four great Presidents. They have really improved that area with new gift shop, bookstore, ice cream parlor, and cafeteria (from our visit 26 years ago).
Then we went through Rapid City on our way to Deadwood. Phil loves Western movies, and really wanted to go there. We had so much fun. We rode Alkaline Ike’s tour bus around the town and up to Boot Hill. We learned so much and really enjoyed it. We took lots of photos (123 today). The town is just rich, rich, rich in history of the Old West. From the tunnels under the town that the Chinese dug for their opium dens, to the Old West look of the buildings in the town, to the graves of Wild Bill Hickok and Calamity Jane on Boot Hill, the town is chock-full of interesting people, places, and history. One interesting tidbit is that the country music duo Big and Rich bought a complex of buildings that used to separate gold from whatever and are making it a hotel, meeting center, and casino. (The town is full of casinos.) Big and Rich also filmed one of their music videos in Deadwood (have no idea which one).
From there, we went to Chief Crazy Horse site and Native American Museum. We went there 26 years ago, and there was just a vague shape and nothing else. Now there is the complete face of Chief Crazy Horse and a huge complex housing a Native American Museum that has tons of things from all the tribes in America. It was fascinating. We watched the introduction video and spent about an hour in the museum. We did not get to see the rest. It was raining pretty hard by then, so we headed back to the camper. We will go back (ticket good for another day within three days of the first visit) and maybe see the laser show at night. It is supposed to be pretty special.
When we approached our little campground, there were two buffaloes by the host camper’s site. Yes, I got photos. I could not post photos of yesterday when I tried this morning. We will try a spot closer to the lodge to see if we get better wifi tomorrow (if it is not raining too hard). If you see any photos, you will know it worked. LOL!
P.S. We were talking about the difference in photography from our last trip. We would NEVER have taken 24 photos in one day (much less 123!!!). Imagine the expense of buying the roll of film and then sending it off to Jack Rabbit for processing! We had to pinch our pennies, and photos were a luxury! And the TIME it took to get the photos back! Wow! What a difference! Viva la difference!

Day 8 - Casper to Custer State Park, SD

Day 8 - The photos will tell the story today. Most will be on Facebook because it is much easier to download and comment on FB. The changes in topography today were incredibly beautiful. The buttes, formations, snowy Big Horn Mountains, grasslands - WOW! We got to Custer State Park around 2:00 p.m. and found our campground. Well, we go around the circle and there is a 34 ft. fifth wheel and big truck parked partially on our site. There were two pull in sites that really were not far off the road. We could not get our camper and truck on our site. He could not put out there slide without it going into the road all the way. Thankfully, a campground host was cleaning the bathrooms because the office was closed (Memorial Day). They found the family a roomier spot in another campground, so we took their site because it had more room. Soon, someone else came and took the one that was supposed to be ours and with a good bit of maneuvering, they got in. We have a beautiful spot beside a stream with a rock cliff and a steep hill across from the stream. In the evening, there were deer in a field grazing. All of a sudden, two buffalo start running up the road. Two ladies said they had been in our campground this afternoon. The rangers were running them out with the truck. They ran into the field beside the campground. I wonder if they will be there tomorrow morning. We have no Internet, so I am typing this and will post when we get wifi. We found wifi in the parking lot of the Game Lodge here in Custer State Park. The signal is not fast and does not want to upload photos. I may have to wait on that. Shucks!
