National ParkIt is a nice ride to Estes Park and to Rocky Mt. National Park, but it is a treat to be in that national park. When you ride up to the Alpine Visitors' Center, you go up to almost 12,000 ft. above sea level on a road that frequently has no shoulder. It was cold up top. When we were there a year ago this past June, there was still a lot of snow left from winter, and we saw a skiier. Although there are snow fields and even fresh snow from this past week's cold front, there wasn't nearly the amount of snow we saw last time we were there. It was a nice day. Phil is sad to leave the West. He just loves this area of the country. I do, too, but I am ready to explore the Northeast, Nova Scotia, etc. We may come back next summer if Hayden wants to come with us. We'd love to be able to bring all our grandchildren when they are around 11 to the West and show them the wonders out here.

I got an e-mail from our neighbor who is getting our mail for us. She said I got a jury summons for Oct. 4, so tomorrow morning, I will be calling the clerk of court. I was supposed to fill out a form and mail it back to them within 10 days. We will not get back until Sept. 27. If they can e-mail it to me, I'll be able to print it and mail it to them.
We spent one night in Rawlins after the three nights in Vernal. Last year when we stayed at Rawlins for the night, Phil was passing a kidney stone and does not even remember the stay. He remembers this year, so that is a good thing.

We are staying in Cheyenne for three nights; one is free (love it). We are going to the state museum here today. Phil went to Sierra Traders yesterday after we got set up, but he did not buy anything. Tomorrow we will take a day trip over to Estes Park, CO, and Rocky Mt. National Park.HAYDENhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07312072028922907252noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3957584671271035552.post-36471885177533225942011-09-14T18:34:00.000-04:002011-09-14T18:34:21.875-04:00Sept. 13 and 14 - Vernal, Utah, Dinosaur National Monument, Utah Field House of Natural HistoryWe have really enjoyed this beautiful area! We had never been here, and I really enjoy a new adventure. After we survived Hwy. 191to get here, we have thoroughly enjoyed Dinosauar National Monument and the Utah Field House of Natural History.

Sept. 13, we rode the road trail through Dinosaur National Monument that showed the beautiful terrain and the petroglyphs. We were amazed how many we saw, even some that were not in the brochure. It was so much fun. I love stuff like that! We also went into the temporary visitors' center. The brand, spanking new one opens in two weeks. Wouldn't you just know? Oh well, it will give us an excuse to come back. They have a huge wall of actual rock taken from the quarry here and technicians have removed a lot of the rock to really expose the dinosaur bones, but it is in the new visitors' center.

Sept. 14, we went back bright and early to Dinosaur National Monument and caught the shuttle to the trail to the quarry (only way to get there). We hiked up the trail and saw the Morrison Formation where the dinosaur bones are found. It used to be an ancient river bed. Besides dinosaur bones, we saw lots of fresh water clam fossils. Then we hiked further up to the Stump Formation. This was once an ancient arctic ocean. There we saw some small clam fossils. They reminded me of the little clams you see in the ocean as the tide comes in and goes out, right at the edge.

On our way back down, we stopped at the Mowry Shale level, where the ocean came back over the land and was about two feet deep before volcanic ash from the Sierras showered down and made the water so muddy and thick, the waterlife died. I saw shale with worm tunnels, a squid-like fossil, and a fish scale. The ash is what later became the shale. I just love geology! This area visibly shows the different eras of our continent and the result of tectonic movement, shifting, bowing, lifting, etc. and changes due to volcanoes, and oceans, rivers, etc. People from all over the world come here to participate in the digs and to see what they produce.

Split Mountain here is unique. The Green River literally split the mountain. Geologists cannot figure out why the water would not have gone around the mountain, in the path of least resistance. I'd love to get a book of geology for dummies about this region! I don't want to know all the chemistry, just the big picture to remind me of the two geology courses I took in college.
We were very down when leaving the Tetons, and we never like getting up at 7:00 a.m. THEN, on Hwy. 191 from Rock Springs, WY, to Vernal, UT, was constantly up and down, the steepest grades we have traveled this summer and grade after grade after grade. There were 7 percent grades, 8 percent grades, and 9 percent grades. The last one had nine switchbacks (hairpin curves). Poor Phil was exhausted, and his right leg was pretty numb by the time we got to Vernal. That made us decide to leave Vernal Thurs. instead of Friday to get across Flaming Gorge and let his back and leg rest before heading to Cheyenne Friday.

Having said that, I must say that the views were spectacular, and we have not seen anything like the Flaming Gorge. The colors and deep reds are beautiful. Every curve (and there were many) held a different scene of beauty. What an awesome God to have thought into being so many different and beautiful and interesting landscapes!
We are always sad to leave here. If this place were a person, I would say it is a kindred spirit to us. When we are not here, we long to be here. Here we feel the peace and beauty God intends for us to have and see.

We went to Jackson Hole to eat at Bubba's BBQ. On the way, we drove the Antelope Flats loop, and finally did see some prong horn. Before we got to that road, we finally saw a huge herd of bison on one side of the road and a herd of horses on the other. The bison herd stretched for several miles. That was the most we have seen on this trip. The smoke still hinders the view, but beautiful it still is. When we got back from there, we started putting things in place for the long ride tomorrow to Vernal, Utah. We hope to spend four nights there to see Flaming Gorge and the dinosaur monument. We have loved the cold nights here and will miss that! It will be warmer in Vernal, no more nights in the 30's!HAYDENhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07312072028922907252noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3957584671271035552.post-43850353773644826202011-09-12T21:22:00.000-04:002011-09-12T21:22:21.228-04:00Sept. 9 – Jenny Lake and MOOSE Junction

view from Dornan's while eating pizza

After lunch, we decided we would ride over to Jenny Lake and Moose Junction. We had good luck last year seeing moose at Moose Junction, although the moose were always in the shrubs. Since we have been here, the views have been a good bit hazy because of wildfires in this state and surrounding states. Still, the views are spectacular. As we were approaching Moose Junction, we saw a crowd on the bridge looking at the opposite side where we saw all the moose last year. There was a spectacular bull moose in plain view. Phil let me out while he went to get a parking spot. Wow, what a blessing it was to see that bull moose! After he parked and joined me, and I got loads of photos, we went right around the corner of the bridge to Dornan's and ate a Greek salad and pizza. Helen and Mike like to eat there and recommended it to us. The view was awesome, but we like Leek's Marina pizza and Greek salad better (although Dornan's was good, too). Leek's Marina Pizzeria closed Sept. 5 for the season. Then we came back to the camper and built a campfire, a perfect end to the day. A few days ago, we got a nice stack of firewood left at one of the group campsites, which we have put to good use. We hate to spend money on firewood, so our campfires have not happened until recently. We thoroughly enjoyed our day! Phil had two really good back days, and then yesterday was problematic, as was today. The back is unpredictable and will definitely need attention when we get home!
HAYDENhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07312072028922907252noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3957584671271035552.post-12808149244126643232011-09-08T18:17:00.000-04:002011-09-08T18:17:30.790-04:00Sept. 7 - Yellowstone day trip

Then we rode to Fishing Bridge where we saw the bison herd last year in August. They had already left except for one fellow. He was probably old. When they get old, they separate from the herd (don't move with them) and are frequently attacked by a wolf pack. Sad old fellow! It was a pleasant day, nonetheless! Now Phil wants to stay through Monday at Colter Bay. Bill and Barbara want us to join them at Deer Run in the Flaming Gorge National Recreation Area. We will have to see how Phil's back is doing Monday morning.HAYDENhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07312072028922907252noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3957584671271035552.post-67648464519110418282011-09-08T18:05:00.000-04:002011-09-08T18:05:37.770-04:00Sept. 5 and 6 - Colter Bay and Jackson with Bill and BarbaraWe took a long walk today down to the lake and then from there to the marina, to the store, and back to the camper. It was a really nice day. Phil's back felt better today, although anything like bending or getting up from a sitting position can put him right into agony in a split second. We were talking about heading home Friday, but now he is thinking he might make it until Monday here and then on to Vernal. He is mixed because if he could get home and get help, we might still be able to go to the Outer Banks the middle of October for the month. The campground owners think they will be up and running by then, and we read where they are going to put a temporary bridge over the largest breech on Hwy. 12 to allow access to Hatteras Island. We had about given up that they would be able to open, but now it seems possible – barring another hurricane!

Our good friends Bill and Barbara

Sept. 6 – Our wonderful friends Bill and Barbara from Townsend and Carrabelle, FL, were camping about 18 miles from Jackson at a National Forest Service campground. They were in Jackson yesterday, and we were going today. They were supposed to leave Hoback today and start heading to Flaming Gorge. They decided to wait, and we met for lunch at the Cadillac Grille in Jackson. We spent three hours together comparing notes and catching up. We had hoped to join them at Flaming Gorge, but we doubt we will make it this trip. On our way back in the Grand Teton National Park, we saw four NPS cars parked with blue lights flashing, a NPS helicopter, a truck with a raft on it, and a NPS truck. There were a group of rangers huddled up. We have no idea what is/was going on. We will ask someone tomorrow. On the way back, the sky was dark, and we got into a rain storm. I got some neat photos. Also, on the way there and back, we saw a huge herd of elk and one buffalo.HAYDENhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07312072028922907252noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3957584671271035552.post-33555872429832554742011-09-08T17:55:00.000-04:002011-09-08T17:55:01.664-04:00Sept. 3 and 4 Colter BayWe have been hanging around Colter Bay these last two days. I have learned to start the generator because bending over and starting the generator is painful for Phil. He has been taking a good bit of ibuprofen. We want to go to the Flaming Gorge area near Vernal, Utah, after we leave here, but it just depends on Phil's back and the weather back home. He said if it is real hot still, he can walk more comfortably here. I AMEN that!!! It looks like the weather may be moderating back home, which is good. I know they are tired of 90+ degree days and high humidity. We are sleeping with two quilts the last few nights. Our Big Buddy propane heater is really good and warms us up quickly(and is easy to start). We had purchased it as a backup for the condo, in case of an ice storm, but it is great for this camper, too.

We did go to Jackson Lodge two days ago. They were having a two-day sale on merchandise from the Grand Teton Lodge stores. I got a t-shirt for $8 and some other things. Then we sat in the great room looking at the gorgeous Tetons. I did not take my computer and wished I had. The internet at the cabin rental office is awfully slow this year. Well, it is time to walk. Have a great day!HAYDENhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07312072028922907252noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3957584671271035552.post-45682813068763378832011-08-31T14:56:00.000-04:002011-08-31T14:56:47.980-04:00Aug. 29 and 30 – Helena to West Yellowstone to Colter Bay, Grand TetonsThe ride from Helena to West Yellowstone was beautiful. We did not go on the interstate, but went most of the way on Montana Hwy 69 to 287, a very scenic and smooth ride. I took a couple of photos of Earthquake Lake which is above Hebgen Dam. It was formed from an earthquake and still has the dead trees that used to be on land before the lake was formed. We spent the night in West Yellowstone. Phil went to the Yellowstone Outlet and got a bargain t-shirt and a good rain jacket. There was ice on the truck bed cover, so we know it got down to freezing. It was quite nippy when we dragged ourselves out of bed at 7:00 a.m. Colter Bay Campground on Jackson Lake is first come, first served, so we wanted to be sure we got a good campsite.

Aug. 30 was another very scenic day as we drove through Yellowstone National Park to get to the Grand Tetons. It is always a treat, and you never get tired of seeing the marvelous features there. We will probably make a day trip or two while we are at Colter Bay. We got set up and can actually see the tip of one of the majestic mountains.

We love Colter Bay. It is one of our favorite places on earth. They told us when we entered that there have been nine grizzlies roaming around the campground this summer, more than ever before. I did not say anything, but at this time of year, they are usually high up the mountains. When we were at West Yellowstone, we heard on the news that a second hiker was killed by a grizzly. He was high up. Still, it would be a treat to see one. I am thinking more about hearing the bugling of the elk.

The only things I miss when we camp with no hookups are my microwave and my toaster oven. We might try to run them with the generator, but in the high altitude, Phil does not want to risk messing anything up. We do use it to make our coffee each morning and recharge the battery.

Phil did an awful lot of stuff yesterday, and I am thankful to say his back did not go out like it did a while back.
We did not have our bicycles last year on the trip. We have been afraid for Phil to take them off the ladder bike rack, but he did yesterday. Now I can ride my bike. I am a happy camper!
We found last year that this particular entry was the most critical. Phil had to open the locked truck bed cover, and they opened the doors to the truck and looked through things. This year they asked if I had any fruit or vegetables. I had a roma tomato and garlic (that I wisely had put inside the truck). I had to give the guard my tomato. That is the first time ever that I have been asked that. Then they asked for the camper keys, and a guard opened the camper and looked inside. We did not have to park and do the slides out, so it was not much of a look. They were very nice, but just more involved than usual (except when we came back from a day trip to Waterton last year).

We were going to stop at Great Falls, MT, but we decided to keep on riding and ended up in Helena for the night. We did grocery shopping, but we are going to save laundry until tomorrow at West Yellowstone. From there we will probably go straight to Colter Bay in the Tetons (one of our all time favorite places).HAYDENhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07312072028922907252noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3957584671271035552.post-44232750273524310662011-08-28T20:44:00.000-04:002011-08-28T20:44:13.429-04:00Aug. 27 - Bison Paddock, walk around town one last time, Prince of Wales HotelThe last day at Waterton had three things on our agenda. It was very windy again and hot (well, hot for here – 82 degrees and low humidity – but hot in the sun). We did our walk this morning and got some last shoreline photos and got Phil's back loosened up. We rode to the Prince of Wales Hotel and took some nice shots of Waterton and the lake. The hotel sits up high and overlooks Waterton township and the upper Waterton Lake. The views on this sunny day from there were wonderful. The lake really showed its colors, too. We went into the hotel lobby and to their giftshop where I got the grands some fossils. I got the girls necklaces with a slice of a fossil, and the boys fossils. We got them t-shirts last year. Phil did not think they were overly excited about them, so I decided to try something different. I hope they like them.
Then we rode to the bison paddock where they keep a small herd of descendants of some of the original Great Plains herd. We saw seven.... It must be a very small herd! When we got back, we went to Pat's, the only gas station in town, and got about six gallons of gas at $1.25 a liter.

Phil was hungry for some pizza, so we walked around town and went to the pizza place. The pizza was very good. Then we went and got a saskatoon ice cream cone to share. THEN, we went to the chocolate shop and got a piece of saskatoon pie and a thing called a grizzly. It is a baked apple covered in crust and caramel and icing drizzled on it. We will share the piece of pie tonight and then share the grizzly tomorrow. I guess you could say we pretty much ate our way through town today.
We have enjoyed our week at Waterton. The only thing we did not do was go back to Cameron Lake and walk the Stinnet Lake trail. There was so much traffic in town today and it is a good ride to Cameron Lake. Phil said it would be nearly impossible to get a park. Then we agreed that we both are kind of pooped today. We have a lot to do to get ready to travel tomorrow morning to Great Falls, MT. There we will have to grocery shop AND do three weeks of laundry!!!!!! The frig is just about empty. Phil would like to get it all done tomorrow and only stay one night in Great Falls. We shall see.... Well, today we woke up and walked to Pearl's Cafe to have breakfast and access the internet. When we got back, it was still calm, so we jumped in the truck and got our tickets for the 1:00 cruise to Goat Haunt. If you go to the Glacier National Park web cams, there is one for Goat Haunt. There are no roads to Goat Haunt, and the easiest way to get there is by the Waterton Lake cruise that we took. The actual Upper Waterton Lake is partially in Canada(Waterton Lakes National Park) and partially in the United States (Glacier National Park). There is a United States Park Service Ranger station at Goat Haunt (Glacier National Park) and a border patrol office. For people wanting to hike from there, they must take their passports and return by 8:00 p.m. to get on the last cruise boat leaving Goat Haunt to return to Waterton township docks. We walked to the dock from the campground. Wouldn't you know the last ten minutes of the cruise and most of the walk home was in a light rain with thunder in the distance.

We learned that Waterton Lake was frozen this year until May 17, much later than usual. The cruises usually occur from April 1 until Oct. 3. We did not see any animals out of the ordinary, which was a disappointment. Still, it was a nice day, and we feel blessed.
Phil's back is always very stiff and crampy in the morning. Walking loosens it up, thankfully. Some chairs are tough, and he will have to stand up and walk around for a bit. It was a pretty good day for his back so far.

We took a nice walk (about an hour) this morning to Cameron Falls and then along Waterton Lake. Then after a snack for lunch, we went to Cameron Lake and walked the 1.9 mile trail along the lake shore. With stops for photos, it took about an hour and a half. Cameron Falls is just on the other side of the campground. The campground has paved trails along the lake and to Cameron Lake.
The wildflowers were nice along the Cameron Lake trail. They are pretty spent elsewhere. Last year, we were here earlier, and the wildflowers were the most beautiful I have ever seen and so thick – EVERYWHERE! We did not see any cougars or grizzlies. There are signs posted about it being berry season, and the grizzlies are active in the area.
Phil's back was a little better today, which gives us hope. He hurt it when he was hooking up the sewer connection (in the middle of the site) earlier in the week. We are in hopes that that injury is healing. As I have said before, we take it one day at a time. If we need to leave for home, we will with no regrets. We feel so blessed to have been able to visit the beautiful places we have seen or revisited this year.
Our son is working in Charlottesville, VA, this week and is supposed to stay through the weekend because the hospital where he is installing patient monitoring systems is brand new, and the move is being made this weekend. This week's big earthquake's epicenter was 27 miles from him. Now it looks like he will have to be concerned about the hurricane and 100 mph winds this weekend. We are praying all our children (and my parents, sister, her husband, brothers and their families) will be safe. We will probably not have internet again until we leave here Sunday and get back into the U.S.A. To know the hurricane's path.

There is a cafe here that gives two hours of very slow internet with a purchase. We ate lunch there Wed. and are eating breakfast to post this. It took an hour and a half of the two hours to download the photos I put on FaceBook Wed. I won't make that mistake again! I barely got to check my mail and children's FaceBook entries and photos before my time was up! I will wait until we get to Great Falls, MT, on Sunday to download photos, probably!HAYDENhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07312072028922907252noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3957584671271035552.post-31867213102736975702011-08-24T14:45:00.001-04:002011-08-24T14:45:04.084-04:00Aug. 23 - Red Rock Canyon Loop and Blakiston Falls and town walkLovely day to hike the Red Rock Canyon loop and then to Blakiston Falls here in Waterton Lakes National Park. We came back to the camper and then after a snack of roasted almonds, we walked around town. We ended up at an ice cream shop getting a Saskatoon Berry (huckleberry) ice cream cone that we shared.
It was a really nice day after a horrible night with Phil's back. It was the first night he could not get comfortable in any position. He did finally take some ibuprofen and was able to get a little sleep. That was two bad nights of sleep for us, and we were about ready to head home. We are taking it one day at a time, and may head home sooner than we planned.

The internet connection here is either very slow or this site is slow. I only loaded four photos, but only Blakiston Falls shows up (and I have waited forever). I will see if FaceBook will load faster.
There is a cougar warning there. The rangers have had to kill one. They think the two lost their mother. The one they killed was emaciated and so desperate that it could not be scared off. The one that is still there has so far been more skiddish, but it does come in close proximity of humans. I hope it stays skiddish!HAYDENhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07312072028922907252noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3957584671271035552.post-48313204013544207222011-08-20T12:07:00.000-04:002011-08-20T12:07:56.826-04:00Aug. 18 - 20 - Banff and Cascade GardensBeautiful day! We visited Cascade Gardens in back of the Banff National Park Administration Building at the end of the main street through Banff. The gardens are gorgeous and free. The terraces of colorful flowers are abundant in their very short growing season here. I heard a worker there say they could not even work the soil until well into June. Phil and I were talking about how in a month, the flowers would be gone because the temps would be below freezing. It might have gotten that cold last night because it was 35 outside and 39 inside the camper this morning. It got up to 61 today. It will be a little warmer tomorrow and in the 70's this weekend. They get really excited up here when the temperature gets up to 30 degrees Celsius. Tomorrow we eat one last time at the Balkan. For $7.50 we get a delicious donair and Greek salad. The donair is a gyro in a pita wrap with lettuce, tomato, and a little creamy sauce. After lunch, we will go to Canmore just to check it out and see if they have a grocery store with an easier parking lot to get in and out of. The Safeway here is very difficult to get in and out. Tomorrow we will start getting things ready to go early Sunday morning. We will be going to Waterton Lakes National Park for a week before heading back into the U.S. Since we have not camped there, we do not know what to expect as far as getting any wifi. Here there are lots of coffee shops with wifi. Online, Phil found one place in Waterton with free wifi (with purchase of coffee, etc.). We also found a restaurant that sells time online.

Aug. 19 – Another beautiful day! We ate at the Balkan for lunch and then drove over to Canmore (about 15 miles away). The population is over 12,000. We found a Safeway with a large parking lot. It was wonderful! There are no spacious parking spaces here in Banff. The only prices on food that are comparable to what we pay in the U.S. are bread and some fruit, like blueberries and cherries. One of their specials for this week is an 8 oz. block of cream cheese 2 for $7.00. Cheese is very expensive here. I brought a bunch with us, so we would not have to purchase any here – meat, too. Skinless, boneless chicken breasts are on special this week for $4.99 a pound. It is funny that some of the things they advertize are in pounds and others are in metric weights. Gas in Banff is $1.14 a liter.

I tortured myself this morning and rolled out of bed at 7:00. Phil got up about 7:30, and we set off for Lake Louise after getting gas. If you do not get to Lake Louise early, you will not get a parking place. It was a beautiful day! Last year when we went to Lake Louise and Moraine Lake, it was very smoky from wildfires in British Columbia. I was so disappointed. I was NOT disappointed today! We walked a lot further than we did a year ago, but we did not make it to the tea house(sorry, Helen G. - we tried!). We walked more than four miles today. After we left the Lake Louise area, we went to Moraine Lake. Last year, Phil could not get a park, so I hopped out and got a couple of shots. This year, we got a park!!!! Truly, I think Moraine Lake is more beautiful than Lake Louise. Lake Louise is beautiful and a kind of milky aqua, but Moraine Lake is sparkly aqua/emerald. We hiked up the path/steps to the top of an old landslide to get a few shots looking down. When my bulk meets a hill and thinner air from the elevation, especially after hiking around Lake Louise and one significant climb there, I am one tired fat woman! Then when we got back, we parked and walked several blocks to eat at our favorite restaurant, The Balkan (Greek). We got a Greek salad and Greek pizza. I am sore and tired, but had an awesome, blessed day! Thank you, Lord, for showing us your incredible beauty! I will put seven or eight photos on the blog and many more on Facebook.
HAYDENhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07312072028922907252noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3957584671271035552.post-74700171404256595002011-08-15T12:13:00.000-04:002011-08-15T12:13:02.024-04:00Aug. 14 - Icefields ParkwayWe rode to the Icefields Parkway Center where we rode the Snowcoach to a glacier last year. We got into some sprinkles closer to the center, but I still was able to get some good photos. At one of the pull-overs, I was taking photos, and my eye caught something dark. It was a big bear eating berries right below me. He stopped eating and looked at me for a minute before he decided I was not a threat. In that time I gauged that I could make it to the truck if he started running up the embankment to get me. It was a black bear.

Grizzlies are scarce here. I heard on the news that the biggest threat to their small grizzly population is trains. They do go to great lengths to protect the animals with eight foot tall fences down both sides of the highway and a good many overpasses just for the animals. They are quite unique. Tomorrow is supposed to be very chilly and rainy. I have been in jeans for the last four or five days. We had to close up the camper one time, and we will probably have to do that tomorrow, too. I just love it!!!!

We did a 45 minute hike on the Fenland Trail loop around the Vermillion Lakes near Banff. The Vermillion Lakes are wetlands, and are not the beautifully colored glacial lakes. They are beautiful in their own right. The stream or creek that was on a lot of the trail was crystal clear and reminded us of the color of Silver Springs in Florida. The bottom was white sand. Then we rode up the road to Mt. Norquay. In the winter it is a very busy place for skiiers. It also has a pullover with wonderful views of Banff.

I have come up with a few differences in being in America and being in Canada. You know you are in Canada if:

1. You never see a sign for restrooms – only washrooms.

2. The Staples going-back-to-school commercial advertises lots of items for less than a Loonie.

3. You hear “eh” and “aboot” for “oh yeah?” and “about.”

4. You get excited about the gas prices until you realize the price is for a liter, instead of a gallon.

5. Speed limit signs of 100 and 110 are NOT in miles per hour!

6. On the news there was a story about decals city workers could put on their cars, but decals is pronounced “deck-uls.” Also, the injured are taken to hospital (not to THE hospital).

7. The news is very slanted against the U.S., and comparisons are constantly made to put the Canadians in a better, superior place. According to their news, their economy is much better than ours and when the world's economy stabilizes, Canada will be in the top countries economically (implies the U.S. will not).

8. News programs and any local program constantly gets the audience attention by saying, “Listen to this, Canada,” or “All right, Canada, it's time to vote for the dancer of your choice (So You Think You Can Dance Canada”, etc. I seldom hear the audience addressed as Americans on our television. The Canadians do seem to be more patriotic than Americans. That is one thing I'd like to see us improve!

9. Progress and some other word I cannot recall have long o's in the pronunciation.

10. Even though I am from the South, in Canada, I am a Yank.

11. They drive KIA Spor-tazsh (instead of Sportage) and Mazda is pronounced with a short a.

12. The road signs are in English and French.

August 13 – Danna and Donna's birthday!!!

Our twin babies are 41 today. They are still beautiful, and I adore them! It was so good to talk to them. They were both getting ready to go to the pool and then later they were going out to dinner with their husbands and three or four more couples. Last year we were in Canada on their birthday, and we did not have the Canada/USA plan, so I had to wait until we got back in the U.S. to talk to them.

Phil has been waking up with cramping in his back/buttocks the last couple of mornings, but it has eased until today. We started out on our walk, and he had to have his back brace. We walked very slowly and had to stop very frequently for the first 30 minutes. It eased up some, and he was able to walk better for the remaining 15 minutes. He is icing it. He does not understand why because we have not missed a day walking, and he does his exercises twice a day faithfully. We are praying daily for his back.

The most eventful thing that happened today was a coyote was about 15 feet from our screen door. He stood there while I got some photos, and then lay down. When I opened the screen a bit to get a better shot, he ran off. He was probably hoping to get one of the many Golden Mantle Ground Squirrels that are all around the campground.

Brice went back for his followup. The tooth that was bonded to the bone did not take. Also, the surgeon wants him to go to his dentist and get the one that calcified checked, too. He said he thinks it is barely attached to the bone, and if that is the case, it will probably work lose over the years. He said he can still put in two posts if all four teeth are removed, and bond a tooth to the other one for each post. Brice said if all he has to do is extract the teeth, that is no problem. His pain was in his chin where they take the bone out for the bone graft.

It is cooler this year than when we were here last year. We are enjoying our jeans and sweatshirts! Next week is supposed to be even cooler and rainier. We were here last year at about the same time. I think we arrived one day earlier this year. The dragon boat races will be held at Lake Minnewanka this Sat. They have free bus rides from the Brewster Tours building to Lake Minnewanka and back. The problem is finding a parking space at or near the Brewster building.

We enjoyed seeing beautiful Lake Minnewanka and Two Jack Lake. At the Two Jack Lake picnic area, we saw a Big Horn Sheep with baby. Down the road, we saw a black bear cub. I got some good photos of it. It was a treat to see! Because the threat of rain is 50% tomorrow and 60% Thursday, we are thinking it may be Friday before we take the computers to get wifi. We are studying the area map to see where we want to go and what we want to do. I know we want to go to the Vermillion Lakes and to Lake Louise. We are going to check to see if their library has wifi available. That would be the best – not feeling like you have to purchase anything to use it!
Last year, we did not use our phone here at all. We are glad Brice is doing well, even though his chin and tooth they bonded to the bone is still sore. He is not happy that that one tooth is crooked. He said he may even tell the oral surgeon to take it out and go with the original plan of bonding a tooth to one of the ones that will go on the implant post. He went back to work this past Monday.HAYDENhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07312072028922907252noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3957584671271035552.post-79638689044915045322011-08-09T11:43:00.000-04:002011-08-09T11:43:22.610-04:00Aug. 8 - Banff (and some photos from Logan's Pass in Glacier)We slept like logs last night and woke up a little after 8:00. It was 48 degrees. Ahhhhhh! It is supposed to be a really nice day. There is a lot of rain in the 10 day forecast, so we will make the best of our sunny days after today. Today will be a little more leisurely as we recover from staying up so late our last night at St. Mary and then driving to Banff.
We went to town to Second Cup, got coffee and a maple walnut muffin. I only ate half my muffin, although I wanted it all!!!! They are the best muffins I have ever had! Last year, Phil tried several others before getting one. Since then, he only has gotten maple walnut muffins. We had access to free wifi there, so we checked e-mail (I had 165 since yesterday.) and Facebook. I type my blog before we go there, and just copy and paste and submit it and the photos. It only allows eight or nine photos per blog. I have many more!!!! We walked all the way up and down the town sidewalks. We will walk around the campground, too. Right across the street is an overlook of the Bow River. I'll take my camera and get some photos. Phil remarked how he had forgotten how steep the mountains are here and how high. It is truly a gorgeous place! We are so blessed to be here again.
P.S. It is Tues. a.m., and the forecast is for 60-70% chance of rain tomorrow and Thurs., so I probably will not get to post until Friday.HAYDENhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07312072028922907252noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3957584671271035552.post-57402614254620642262011-08-08T12:12:00.000-04:002011-08-08T12:12:50.586-04:00Aug. 6 (St. Mary) and Aug. 7 travel to Banff

It is owned by Blackfeet, and they raise and butcher the meat they serve. They put some kind of marinade or glaze on it that makes it delicious (my favorite anywhere). Also, they do not tell you how many ounces anything is. The filet is huge, about as big as my entire hand and almost three thicknesses (Needless to say, I have a lot left over.).

A neighbor camper told us he'd talked to an astronomer at the visitors' center who said we should be able to see the Northern Lights that night. The astronomer had viewed them the night before, and said they should be even better tonight from about 11:00 until 12:30. He was leading a group up to Big Chief Mountain for the best viewing. The group would not get back to the visitors' center until at least 2:00 a.m. As much as I wanted to go, I knew we would be getting up early to go to Banff. Phil needed his beauty and driving sleep! We had a good view to the north except for a slight hill and trees, so we thought we'd be fine. I was so excited!!!! I asked in Banff last year when they got to see the Northern Lights. They said the winter.

About 9:30 p.m. a group of boy scouts came and started setting up camp north of us. When 11:00 came, they were still setting up camp. There was one bright lantern and all the headlights they all wore. The motorhome beside us (north side) had lights on inside, too. Finally the boys settled down. We started seeing what looked like distant lightning. Some times after the flash, there was a shimmering of light, but no colors that we could see. We did see three shooting stars. I did not get any photos because the shimmering was the only thing that lasted and it was not very bright. So our experience with the Northern Lights was a little disappointing. We stayed up until 12:20 before we crashed. By the way, it was the first night I wore jeans and a jacket! It was very chilly!

The drive to Banff was uneventful, just the way we like it. Crossing the border was a snap. I had my potatoes, an onion, and part of a bulb of garlic in the backseat, if they asked if we had fruit or veggies to declare. Phil loves Tim Horton coffee (chain store in Canada), so we stopped at the first one about two hours into our drive. They have wonderful pastries, too, but we got a breakfast biscuit. The Canadian Rockies are visible almost the entire way, even though most of the drive until you are north/west of Calgary is just slightly hilly and a lot flat. Our GPS took us around Calgary, and it was much easier than last year. Last year we stayed the night in Calgary, and the GPS directed us right through the heart of the city – no fun pulling a camper! Today was a breeze on Hwy. 22X.

We have a lovely campsite at the Tunnel Mountain Trailer Court. I am so spoiled now with all my new toys that I love to have my hookups! We camped three nights with none, and that was fine. We enjoyed St. Mary, but I am glad to get back to my hookups! Phil laughed today at how last year I would bellyache about forking out the money for full hookups, and now I see no problem whatsoever with whatever we have to pay to get them! I love Social Security! I hope it does not go away!

For the rest of today, we will relax. Tomorrow I want to vacuum and mop the camper. I defrosted the freezer part of the frig after we got set up today. I am still loving having that large frig/freezer in this camper! I hope we will go down to Second Cup tomorrow morning, get some delicious coffee (maybe a maple nut muffin), and check our e-mail. I have not taken any photos today, but I'll be taking some tomorrow, I am sure!
At 3:00 p.m. in Banff, it is 68 degrees with a very chilly breeze. It was only supposed to be a two – two and a half hour drive from Conrad. When we got to Browning, Hwy. 89 was closed, so we had to take a detour that was over twice as long as the 31 miles it would have taken from Browning. We had to go to Babb and then down to St. Mary. Then Phil made a wrong turn, and we ended up on Many Glacier Rd. headed for Many Glacier (a GORGEOUS place!!). However, the road is awful, AND they were doing road construction. We went maybe 10 miles before we found a place we could turn around and head back to St. Mary. It was a long day! We got to St. Mary, drank a Big Sky brewery beer (Summer Honey or Trout Slayer), and had leftover spaghetti. It really got chilly last night (low 40's), and we slept great!
Aug. 5, we walked down to the St. Mary Visitors' Center and back for our morning walk. After lunch we decided to take the shuttle to Logan Pass. We decided we would attempt the hike to Hidden Lake because Dad and several other people have told us how beautiful it is. I wore my Crocs because I walk in them every day. The path to Hidden Lake is paved and boardwalk, so I thought no problem. What we did not count on were the broad patches of snow on inclines/declines. After the third patch, we decided it was too dangerous. We did not take our walking sticks, either. I do not think the shoes would have mattered(except for keeping my feet warm), but the hiking poles would have been wonderful! We saw people with snowboards and skis going up and had a snowboarder zip past us coming down. I was so disappointed we could not make it to see Hidden Lake, but within a minute after we turned around, we heard thunder and felt a mist of rain. God was looking out for us! I'd hate to have made it and gotten struck by lightening! It was a great day, and we did get a good bit of exercise (for us). We had a good walk down to the visitors' center and then the walk up as far as we got on the Hidden Lake trail. We felt pretty good until the girl waiting for the shuttle back to St. Mary said she went on a 20 mile hike yesterday....

When we got back to our camper, I checked FaceBook. The Glacier National Park had a link to an announcement of a bear attack on a 50 year old man who was hiking one of the trails to a waterfall near Many Glacier (our side of the park). It was a sow with a sub-adult. The man had bear spray, but he could not get it before she attacked him. I think it was his left leg and arm/shoulder that got the bites. Also, she pulled him by his leg and shook him before she left him. He was able to get back down the trail where he ran into a ranger taking a group on a hike. An ambulance took him to a hospital in Browning for treatment. He is very fortunate to have survived! Lesson learned: Keep bear spray in your hand or easily accessible pocket!

It is wonderful to be back at St. Mary. There is a lot more snow still on the ground than there was last year. The rivers are still a little flooded from snow still melting. It is beautiful here and the lakes and mountains sing God's Glory!
There were miles and miles of just dirt with a little gravel on it. The worst part was a long, long, long section of tar with loose gravel (called chip and seal). It sounded like we were in an awful hail storm. There are tar covered pebbles all over the truck and camper. Phil said he would probably never get it all off. He was just a little irritated by it (gross understatement). So we left Ennis around 10:00 and got to Conrad around 4:30. I am so glad I had some homemade spaghetti sauce in the freezer for tonight! Tomorrow we go to St. Mary, which is no more than 150 miles from here. We will stay three nights before going to Canada. I have already started praying that we have a quick, successful crossing at the border because this pantry and frig are full to the brim!
I took some photos today as we traveled. It was fun to go through Townsend, MT. I enjoyed the Missouri River and saw a good many float boats and even two people tubing.
Last summer, we probably were in jeans all but about 10 days. This summer is much hotter. The only place we had a problem with mosquitos was St. Mary last year. This year I hear they are awful in Yellowstone, Tetons, AND St. Mary/Glacier. I hope they are not bad in Banff. The weather report for Banff has it raining our first five out of six days. I also hope we can get to Lake Louise this time without all the smoke from fires in BC.HAYDENhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07312072028922907252noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3957584671271035552.post-13581035179398434152011-08-01T19:33:00.001-04:002011-08-01T19:55:24.573-04:00Aug. 1 - Ennis (side trip to Bozeman)I am going to post a couple of photos I took yesterday evening. The mixture of storm clouds, sunshine, and finally a rainbow made for some great evening photos. We went to Bozeman today to get the oil changed in the truck and do some heavy duty grocery shopping for the trip to St. Mary and then three weeks in Canada. Young adults were panhandling at both entrances to Walmart. One even had a sign that said, "Why lie? I need a joint bad." Can you believe that???? If we had had to stop, I'd have told him he needed Jesus bad, not a joint!

We do laundry tomorrow and start getting things situated to go to Conrad for Wed. night. Then we go to St. Mary's Campground, a national park campground, with no hookups for three days. I am spoiled. I really like to use all my toys! I miss my toaster oven and microwave when we dry camp, but with the generator, we can at least use the coffee maker in the morning and keep the cell phones charged.

I also have scheduled my phone to cover us in Canada. I will not be able to use my Internet, nor e-mail services, though. Son Brice is having oral surgery to start the implant process for three bottom teeth this Thursday, and I want to be able to check on his recovery. While we are in Banff, we will go to a coffee shop every day or two to check our e-mail. I hope I can resist their fabulous maple nut muffins!!!

When we came back to the campground today, Phil was unloading stuff while I put groceries away. He said he saw a motorhome on fire. The fire department showed up and extinguished it. Phil said it looked like it was in the kitchen area. I guess that ruined their trip! It would mine!

We had a scare with Phil's back. He was bringing in a 24 pack of bottled water and felt something in his back move. He dropped the water and then went for a walk. He said it feels real tight. He is going to take some muscle relaxers and see how it goes. All prayers are welcome!
